October 6th
Sunday! The day started early with multiple cups of coffee and the vague sense of productivity, half-working on this and that before finally heading out of the house just after noon. Our destination – A vegan food fest. Not the quickest bus ride, but we got to stop along Calle 9 de Julio—the most famous street in Buenos Aires, complete with historic Teatro Colón and the iconic obelisk. Naturally, we couldn’t resist taking classic touristy photos.
The vegan fest was totally worth the wait. It was packed with food stalls and eco-friendly booths, and we ate everything. A sourdough falafel crepe, an asian inspired fried tofu sandwich, the most amazing red velvet cake, and a chocolate chip cookie because why not? The crowd was lively, and a live Spanish band had the middle aged women up on their feet and showing off their dance moves.
Right next to the fest was a flea market, so we wandered through it for a while, checking out all the cool antiques and daydreaming about how we’d use them to decorate. We laughed about the snoring man close to us as we took another long bus ride home, full and happy after spending the afternoon eating and exploring.
Later, I ventured out on my own to grab groceries. I love checking out grocery stores in other countries—it’s always an adventure of new sights, smells, and treats to try. Plus, the added challenge of figuring out how things work. At this store everyone was getting their produce weighed by one guy at a designated station, so I got in line and did the same. I also grabbed some prepackaged stuff, thinking it was good to go. Nope. Apparently, that needed weighing too. Cue me standing in a packed Sunday night checkout line, only to be humbled at checkout when half my cart couldn’t be checked out. Oops, now I know.
